'cause I would totally jump off that cliff

Okay so I'm turning old on the 12th and I've decided that I'm finally going to get a tattoo. I've always wanted to, for the experience if nothing else, and my birthday seems like as good a day as any.

I know that I want a phrase and the three that I came up with are:

(1) Eppur si muove - and yet it moves. There is an apocryphal story about Galileo muttering the phrase after being forced by the Catholic Church to recant. I like it, but I don't speak Italian and I don't really feel comfortable tattooing myself in a language I don't understand.

(2) Il faut souffrir pour etre belle - one has to suffer to be beautiful. My mother has said this as long as I can remember. I think it's very appropriate, however somebody already beat me to it. There's nothing new under the sun, but since I actually speak French and I have a connection to the phrase I still like the idea.

(3) La plus belle femme du monde ne peut donner que ce qu'elle a - the most beautiful woman in the world can only give what she has. One of my mother's favorite phrases. The only downside is that I'm not sure I spelled everything right, and I don't really want to ask my mother.

So I've thought about it, and I'm thinking why not get both phrases (2) and (3), one on either side of my torso? They kind of go together and the symmetry would be aesthetically pleasing. Opinions? Thoughts? Francophones who can spot my typos?

see, now i like the italian one the best, but i think its because i like what it means to me, so why would i pick it for you? it sounds like you know which one you want, or at least it seems that way to me (the second one) and, you dont have to get two at once if you dont want to. but, you wont regret it, its wonderful.

I really like the Italian one as well.. it was originally my first pick. But then I realized that I don't really know how to pronounce it and it just didn't sit well with me, to have a tattoo in a language I don't understand.

Plus, I like the French ones because my mommy says them and I love my mommy =)

I like them all. I say get the French ones if you can verify the spelling on that second one.

And please! Turning old?! You haven't even reached the quarter century mark. Psh.

by either side of your torso do you mean front and back? because i'm not sure what's cooler than a girl with the lettering on her belly as well as the semi-tramp stamp on the back.

No actually I was thinking on my sides. I just don't have the discipline to have a belly tattoo.

edluv said...

of course. who has that sort of discipline? i mean, other than tupac. and where did that get him? dead.

btw, you know what would go fabulous with a tattoo? a painting. of a person in a bottle.

True, I consider discipline a hazard to my health.

You're right about the painting.. if only I knew of somebody, perhaps an artist of some kind, who had such a painting for sale in Atlanta. Qu'elle dommage.

see, with this magical internets and the postal service things can go anywhere.

Huh, never heard of it.

Seriously though, if you really do want to sell that piece I might be interested in June (once I move).
