Things I hope I never have to say at a party

"I study spider sex."

Of course, a big part of that is because I'd get really tired, really fast of having to defend my "useless" research.

I'm all for basic biological research ("really?!" You say, "I find that hard to believe") but sometimes I wonder what drew somebody to a research project in the first place.

I can't imagine writing a grant proposal or statement of purpose where you talk about how excited you are about spider sex.

That said, one thing I did find interesting in the article is that they don't actually know how the spiders detect UVB light.

LOL Adam.

I often wonder how my profs got into particular areas of History, like when did they wake up and say, "Gee, nobody has written about Canadian youth and how American music has affected their popular tastes. Why is that?"

I think that might be the spider sex of Canadian studies.
