Family Matters

My uncle, my mother's oldest brother, is working on the genealogy of the family. As part of this project, he has been collecting old photos, some of which he sent to my mother and my mother passed these photos along to me.

Here is one I especially like, of my maternal grandmother and her second husband.

My mother and I also spoke of chronicling some of the family history. Both of my parents come from very interesting families and my mother's side lived through both of the World Wars in Europe. I remember vividly being a little girl and listening to my grandmother speaking of the German occupation, however I do not remember the stories themselves very well. The clearest memory I have is of my grandmother punchline to a story, “now is not the time to say we are Jewish." My hope is that in addition to photos, I might one day share stories as well.

I know, I was telling Adam that I love the clothing in the photo. My step-grandfather's suit as well.

Don't get me wrong, I love being able to wear jeans and vote and not die of polio or whatever but there is an elegance in that photo that you just don't see very much anymore.
